British anti-trust watchdog to probe music streaming market

London, October 19 (SocialNews.XYZ) In order to expand competition in the digital markets, the UK’s Competition and Market Authority (CMA) announced on Tuesday that it would launch an investigation into the music streaming market.

The UK antitrust authorities will review and develop the final scope of the market study before it is officially launched as soon as possible.

In a statement, the CMA said it had written to the government and the Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee outlining the intended next steps.

“The UK is a love affair with music and is home to many of the world’s most popular artists. We want to do everything in our power to ensure that this sector is competitive, thriving and working in the interests of music lovers, ”the UK watchdog said in a statement.

When it comes to music streaming, the European Union’s regulators are a bit ahead of their counterparts in the UK – in April the Competition Commission charged Apple with an antitrust violation related to competition in the music streaming services market.

In the music streaming sector, the European Commission issued a formal “Statement of Objections” to Apple in April saying that Apple’s app store rules distort competition in the music streaming services market.

The Swedish music streaming giant Spotify had long complained about the “unfair” terms of Apple’s terms and conditions.

According to the British watchdog, the music industry has grown almost beyond recognition over the past decade, with streaming now accounting for more than 80 percent of all music heard in this country.

“A market study will help us understand these radical changes and gain an assessment of whether competition in this sector is working well or whether further action is needed,” said Andrea Coscelli, CEO of CMA.

The CMA is conducting a number of ongoing research that will encourage competition in digital markets. This includes the investigation of Google’s “privacy sandbox”, the use of advertising data by Facebook and the Apple App Store.
