We tried the viral picket spoon TikTok hack – and have been shocked with the outcomes

The TikTok social media website is full of “life hacks” that rarely seem to work once you try them out at home.

So of course I was dubious when a new viral life hack made the rounds on the social media platform and showed how much dirt is hidden in a wooden spoon and how it can be cleaned quickly and easily.

The helpful but rough video has garnered 13 million views. The clip entitled “Spoon clean” shows a wooden spoon that is placed in a glass of boiling water.

Just half an hour later, the spoon will appear to be clean and the water incredibly dirty.

Desperate to expose a life hack by simply setting up the kettle, I got to work.

The video is simple enough, just boil a kettle, pour some boiling water in a glass and let the spoon stand for half an hour.

Instead of pouring the boiling water into a glass mug, which I was told is a bad idea and could break it, I instead opted for a large glass jug that was supposed to hold hot liquids.

I dropped into the spoon and went back about half an hour later.

To my surprise (or not) nothing had happened, the spoon was just wet and there was no leftover food in the jug. I was disappointed but not shocked.

Now for the plot change.

I forgot to take the spoon out of the jug when I went back to work and when I came back a few hours later I was surprised because, similar to the TikTok video, I now have a jug of disgusting water thanks to my wooden spoon would have.

I never expected the hack to actually work

Obviously my spoon had a less traumatic life than the one shown in the TikTok video because the water didn’t turn yellow and there was significantly less debris floating around in the water.

But while I was shocked, a life hack actually worked. Kind of.

I quickly informed my father, who is at an age when he is fascinated by things to do with cleaning and washing.

Then he told me a story about my grandfather who refused to buy fairy liquid from a vendor because boiling water did the trick well.

Obviously, my late grandfather knew what he was talking about and would have been a total TikTok legend.
