TikTok will add PSAs to Holocaust-related content material
TikTok adds PSAs and informational resources about the Holocaust to combat anti-Semitism in its app. With the changes, TikTok will link to aboutholocaust.org when users search for Holocaust-related content. Holocaust-related hashtags are also linked to the site, along with a short PSA.
“While browsing this topic, we encourage you to fact-check against trusted sources such as the multilingual website (aboutholocaust.org) for essential information about the history of the Holocaust and its legacy,” the message reads. The app will also add a persistent banner at the end of Holocaust-related videos, urging users to “get the facts about the Holocaust.” This change will be implemented “in the coming months”.
Although TikTok’s rules prohibit hate speech, Holocaust denial, and other forms of anti-Semitism, the app has been criticized in the past for allowing the distribution of anti-Semitic content on its platform. Last year, the Anti-Defamation League published a blog post with a series of examples of “posts that perpetuate age-old anti-Semitic tropes and conspiracy theories.” The organization urged TikTok to “take a systematic approach to this.”
TikTok adds educational resources to searches for Holocaust-related content.
In its most recent statement, TikTok notes that it blocks Holocaust search results that may violate its rules and that it uses “a combination of technologies and moderation teams to remove anti-Semitic content and accounts from our platform, including Holocaust denial or any other.” form of hate speech against the Jewish community.”
