TikTok joins the old 1 billion user club, with ByteDance’s own video platform reporting on Monday that it now officially has just as many active monthly users.

That number in itself is honestly astonishing, especially considering the fact that TikTok has only been around for three years. Instagram, by comparison, launched in 2010 and is also said to have around 1 billion active monthly users while Facebook, which came on the market in 2004, has around 2.89 billion euros. TikTok was launched in 2018 as the reincarnation of Musical.ly, another short, music-focused video app acquired by Chinese multinational ByteDance in 2017. Though it only ever garnered 40 million active monthly users, Musical .ly has had a critical impact on both the live streaming video ecosystem and the cultural scene, changing the way teenagers interacted with one another, and adding to the memorization of Music has an undeniable influence.

After ByteDance switched the user base from Musical.ly to TikTok, that popularity continued to grow. TikTok has become the most downloaded app in the world, it claims 315 million downloads in the first quarter of the year alone.

The success of TikTok is also particularly impressive, given that at the same time the presidential administration of a Donald J. Trump did everything in their power to grind it to dust. In August 2020, the former president threatened to ban the app due to exaggerated fears about its ties to the Chinese government, unless ByteDance forked over majority control of TikTok to American companies – an order that President Joe Biden later revoked.

In one Video Vanessa Pappas, COO of TikTok, said on Monday that “over a billion people from all over the world come to TikTok to be entertained, inspired or to discover something new, such as sports, music, art and culture, fashion, DIY and more.”

Warm applause for TikTok, the platform that gave birth to the D’Amelio sisters, a Ratatouille-inspired musical, and tons of fun new opportunities for teenagers fined. Hopefully at the 2 billion monthly active users mark the world is a little less of a dumpster fire.
