TikTok dethrones Google to turn out to be hottest web site

San Francisco: The popular short video platform TikTok has overtaken tech giant Google as the most popular website of the year, according to a report.

According to a report by the IT security company Cloudflare, the viral video app gets more hits than the US search engine, reports the BBC.

The rankings show that TikTok ousted Google from the top spot in February, March and June of this year and has been number one since August.

In 2020, Google was the first, and a number of other sites, including TikTok, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Netflix, were all in the top 10.

According to the report, one of the reasons Tiktok’s surge in popularity is believed to be due to the Covid-19 pandemic, as people are stuck at home looking for entertainment due to lockdowns.

The social network, owned by China-based company Bytedance, now has more than a billion active users around the world, and that number continues to grow.

In June 2020, the Indian government banned the popular TikTok short video app amid border tensions with China.
