According to Snap officials, the changes clarify which public posts qualify for broader algorithmic distribution beyond a creator’s friends or subscribers by establishing a higher standard than basic platform availability.

Snapchat’s updated guidelines establish a higher standard for public content to qualify for algorithmic recommendation on platforms such as Spotlight, Discover, and Snap Map, officials said. The new rules, effective Nov. 1, 2023, distinguish between content that is merely allowed on the platform and content eligible for broader exposure beyond a creator’s immediate friends or followers, according to Snap’s published policy documents.

Snap’s guidelines clarify that content meeting the company’s Community Guidelines may still be excluded from recommendation if it does not meet the higher threshold for distribution, officials confirmed.

The recommendation eligibility rules apply exclusively to public posts and Stories, which are accessible to all Snapchat users, unlike private Stories shared only with friends. This distinction means that creators may retain some visibility for their content among limited audiences while losing access to algorithmic amplification on public surfaces.

Snap’s Community Guidelines remain the baseline for content allowed on the platform, with removal reserved for material violating those standards, according to the company. However, recommendation eligibility requires compliance with additional criteria, including quality, originality, and content restrictions, Snap officials said. Creators posting to Spotlight or Discover must meet both sets of requirements to have their content broadly recommended.

Quality standards exclude videos that are blurry, pixelated, incorrectly oriented, or otherwise technically deficient, according to a March 2026 update on Snapchat’s recommendation guidelines. Letterboxed videos, missing audio, and poorly reformatted content may also be ineligible for amplification. Snap further restricts unoriginal content, including material copied without meaningful creative transformation, and low-effort reaction posts that primarily repost others’ content, the documents show. Repeatedly posting identical or minimally altered material is also prohibited from recommendation.

The guidelines impose stricter standards on false, misleading, and political information than those applied to content visible only to friends or followers. Snapchat prohibits the recommendation of political falsehoods, such as erroneous voting information or misrepresentations of candidates’ positions, according to a policy update dated Nov. 5, 2025. Content that cannot be verified or contains ambiguous claims may remain available to limited audiences but be excluded from wider distribution. Health-related misinformation faces a similarly elevated bar for recommendation, officials said.

Sexual and mature content faces additional constraints under the new rules. Nudity is prohibited from recommendation in any form, including paintings and AI-generated images, even if such content does not violate Snapchat’s broader Community Guidelines, according to the sexual-content policy updated in November 2025. The guidelines also bar depictions or imitations of sex acts, including fully clothed gestures presented as jokes or innuendo. Sexualized emphasis on body parts commonly associated with sexuality may disqualify content from broader recommendation. Furthermore, Snapchat restricts violent or disturbing imagery, particularly non-newsworthy incidents involving minors, from amplification, the company said.

Snapchat’s ranking system favors authentic, human-made content over AI-generated material produced outside the platform, even if the latter includes disclosures about its origin. Content created using Snapchat’s own AI tools remains eligible for recommendation due to built-in transparency indicators, according to the March 2026 guidelines. However, unoriginal or minimally transformed content is excluded regardless of whether it is human- or AI-generated. The company also limits links that redirect users to social media, messaging, or cloud-storage services, with exceptions for vetted creators and specific surfaces. Creators are prohibited from changing link destinations after publication to evade review.

Public content undergoes automated review before recommendation, with ongoing reassessment while it remains distributed, Snap officials said. Once content reaches a certain view threshold, it is subject to human moderation prior to receiving broader exposure. The company’s Code of Conduct, updated in December 2024, specifies that suggestive public content is labeled through machine learning and human review to prevent recommendation to teen accounts.

The main Snapchat recommendation-guidelines page was first published on Oct. 24, 2024, with an update recorded on Sept. 27, 2026. The quality-specific recommendation page, dated March 17, 2026, includes provisions on video quality, originality, links, and external AI-generated content. Snapchat’s monetization materials require creators to produce original, advertiser-friendly content that complies with both the Community Guidelines and the recommendation eligibility rules, according to company documents.

The restructuring of Snapchat’s recommendation eligibility guidelines effectively means that some public creators may continue to share content with limited audiences while losing algorithmic amplification on public surfaces such as Spotlight, Discover, Stories, or Snap Map. The changes aim to increase transparency about which public posts qualify for broader distribution, according to Snap officials.

Kyle Svara, a 27-year-old man from Oswego, Illinois, was sentenced Tuesday to 76 months in prison by a federal judge in Boston for hacking Snapchat accounts. According to federal prosecutors, Svara admitted to illegally accessing hundreds of accounts to steal and distribute nude and semi-nude photos of women, including college students.

Svara was sentenced Tuesday, July 21, 2026, by U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston federal court to 76 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to federal prosecutors and local media reports. At the time of sentencing, Svara was 27 years old. The sentence exceeded the three-year prison term initially recommended by prosecutors under a plea agreement reached earlier in the case.

Svara hacked into at least 517 Snapchat accounts belonging primarily to women, including college students and student-athletes, from May 2020 through February 2021.

Federal charging documents and court records show that Prosecutors said he used anonymized, internet-based phone numbers to send phishing text messages to more than 1,500 women, falsely posing as Snapchat support to trick victims into providing security codes. Nearly 600 women responded with these codes, enabling Svara to bypass Snapchat’s security measures and access their accounts without authorization.

Once inside the accounts, Svara downloaded nude or semi-nude photos from at least 59 women, according to filings by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. Prosecutors stated that he kept, sold, or traded these images on the internet, treating them as digital contraband. Victims included students from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, whose accounts were among those compromised, as reported by WGME, a local Maine television station.

The case is linked to a prior prosecution involving a former Northeastern University track-and-field coach, who paid Svara to hack the Snapchat accounts of student-athletes and other women associated with the university. Federal officials said this connection expanded the scope of Svara’s scheme beyond random targets to include specific individuals tied to the coach’s activities.

Svara faced multiple federal charges, including aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, computer fraud, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, and making false statements related to child pornography, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts. He pleaded guilty in February 2026 to computer fraud, aggravated identity theft, and other counts, admitting to phishing Snapchat login credentials to steal private images. Prosecutors also noted that Svara lied about collecting child sexual abuse material during the fraud, a charge to which he admitted as part of his plea.

The phishing scheme relied on social engineering tactics, with Svara impersonating Snapchat support to induce victims to share their security codes. Prosecutors explained that he used anonymized phone numbers to obscure his identity and make the scheme harder to detect. These methods allowed him to infiltrate hundreds of private Snapchat accounts and access sensitive content.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office described the operation as a large-scale effort that compromised the privacy of hundreds of women and involved the illegal trading of sexually explicit images online. Reuters reported on the sentencing, highlighting the six-year prison term and the scope of the hacking campaign. U.S. News & World Report and Ground News also covered the story, noting the targeting of more than 1,500 women and the downloading of images from at least 59 accounts.

Judge Murphy’s sentence reflects the severity of the offenses and the impact on victims, according to federal officials. After serving his prison term, Svara will be subject to supervised release for three years, a standard period of post-incarceration monitoring in federal cases.

The prosecution was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, which continues to address cybercrime and privacy violations involving social media platforms. The case underscores ongoing federal efforts to combat phishing and unauthorized access to personal digital accounts.
