LinkedIn’s designation of Sacramento as one of the fastest-growing job markets is based on data tracking hiring rates, wage gains, and labor-market tightness across U.S. metropolitan areas, according to the company’s latest report. The analysis focuses on job-market momentum rather than absolute employment numbers and highlights Sacramento’s acceleration compared with its pre-pandemic trends and other large metros nationwide. LinkedIn’s findings align with data from the California Employment Development Department (EDD), which projects the Sacramento region will add 162,000 jobs between 2020 and 2030, representing a 16% growth rate for the decade.

EDD records show the Sacramento area added nearly 50,000 jobs in 2022, increasing average monthly employment from about 1 million in 2021 to approximately 1.1 million across the four-county region.

The average monthly unemployment rate dropped from 6.4% in 2021 to 3.6% in 2022, reflecting a tightening labor market. More recent data from the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom Metropolitan Statistical Area indicate the unemployment rate was 4.8% in December 2025, down from 5.1% in November 2025, according to EDD reports, though still slightly above the 4.5% rate recorded a year earlier.

Additional analysis by ADP’s research division ranks Sacramento as the sixth-strongest job market among 55 major U.S. metros, reinforcing LinkedIn’s assessment. EDD projections identify fitness trainers and aerobics instructors as among the fastest-growing occupations, with jobs expected to increase from 1,830 in 2020 to 3,060 by 2030, a 67.2% rise with a median annual salary of $52,194. The region’s restaurants and hotels sector added about 8,400 jobs in 2022, an 11% growth rate, while health care and social assistance expanded by 7,300 jobs, a 5% increase from the prior year. The arts, entertainment, and recreation sector, though smaller, grew by 21% with approximately 2,800 new jobs in 2022.

Sacramento County’s economic forecast projects job growth averaging 0.9% annually from 2024 to 2028, resulting in roughly 33,600 additional jobs. Professional and business services are expected to be the largest source of new employment, adding nearly 13,000 jobs over that period with an average annual growth of 2.2%. The trade, transportation, and utilities sector is also a significant contributor, with 8,500 jobs added in 2023 and a 6.9% growth rate, with more than 10,000 additional jobs forecasted between 2024 and 2028. Leisure and hospitality employment surged 16.2% in 2022, reflecting rapid expansion in tourism and service industries following pandemic-related declines.

A 2025 regional workforce report highlights agriculture, water, and environmental technologies as fast-growing job categories in the Sacramento area, reflecting emerging green economy and climate-related employment. Other priority sectors include advanced manufacturing; advanced transportation and logistics; energy, construction and utilities; health; information technology and digital media; life sciences and biotechnology; and public safety. The report also lists top jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree, such as registered nurses, software developers, civil engineers, and health services managers, alongside fast-growing occupations that do not require post-secondary education but need specialized training, including sales representatives, roofers, and refuse and recyclable materials collectors.

Regional workforce agencies such as the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA), Golden Sierra Workforce Board, YoloWorks, and local community college and university career centers are identified as key resources supporting job seekers in the expanding labor market.
