Replace concerning the October 4th outage

To all people and companies around the world who depend on us, we apologize for the inconvenience caused by today’s failure of our platforms. We worked as hard as possible to get access back and our systems are now back up and running. The underlying cause of this failure also impacted many of the internal tools and systems we use in our day-to-day operations, making our attempts to diagnose and fix the problem quickly difficult.

Our development teams learned that configuration changes to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers created problems that disrupted that communication. This disruption in network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate and brought our services to a standstill.

Our services are now back online and we are actively working to bring them fully back into regular operation. At this point, we want to make it clear that we believe the main cause of this failure was an incorrect configuration change. We also have no evidence that this downtime has compromised user data.

People and companies around the world rely on us every day to keep connected. We understand the impact of such outages on people’s lives and our responsibility to keep people informed of any interruptions to our services. We apologize to all concerned and are working to understand more about what happened today so that we can continue to make our infrastructure more resilient.
