Meet the Co Down entrepreneur utilizing TikTok to show younger folks easy methods to make their very own cash in lockdown

TikTok has become a popular platform for young people to express their talents and learn new skills while combating boredom.

Co Down’s 21-year-old graduate student Matthew Morgan took his passion for business and marketing into the video sharing app to inspire others to use their skills and make their own money during the pandemic.

His @moneywithmatt account shares tips on building your own successful online business, making money on TikTok views, as well as copywriting and tips on creating a YouTube channel.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Matthew described how he started his own freelance marketing business while studying at Liverpool University last year, always knowing he wanted to be his own boss.

He said, “I’ve always really worked in restaurant jobs and I knew I wanted to work for myself.

“It wasn’t until Covid came around that I actually had the motivation to do this as there were no jobs and I thought I was going to go all-in for a while and try to get it going.”

Because of his determination and enthusiasm, Matthew’s marketing business has grown to be a growing success as a number of clients hired him to generate more sales.

He added, “Over the past four to five years I’ve been looking for many opportunities to make money and everywhere you go you meet people trying to find you a quick way to get rich, that doesn’t really work and lasts year I realized that the best way to do this is to learn a skill and get good at it.

“It can be a slow process to get started, but when it started I realized it was real.

“I thought if I can learn a skill nobody can take it away from me,” he said.

With the growing success of his new company, he decided to go to TikTok to highlight what he has learned and show others that they can make the best of a bad situation too.

“When work started I decided to make some TikTok videos to get a few more clients, but I wasn’t expecting much from it,” he said.

“At some point they got more and more views and at first I didn’t even have my face in them and then one of the videos exploded one night and I couldn’t believe it.

“I then decided to start a YouTube channel as well to help young people interested in doing what I do. It’s been almost a year since I started and I love it. “

He stressed that “there has never been a better time to get started” as there are fewer distractions and people have more free time to work on themselves.

“I used to make excuses all the time and now you can’t make any more because you have all the time in the world to work on.

“TikTok is a great way to open doors,” he added.

“If you are a beginner, I would say learn a skill and then learn how to sell it.

“If you’re good at selling yourself, it will never feel like work again.”

His advice to other young people considering starting a YouTube channel or using their social media platforms to explore something they are passionate about is to give it a try and not get away from other people’s comments to be deterred from doing what you can.

Matthew said, “I think a lot of young people would be nervous about starting a page and that was me in the beginning, so I didn’t put my face in my videos.

“I’ve gotten better and more confident over time, so I would give it a try.”
