KSP responds to TikTok video displaying trooper standing by as two folks pin down man
HAZARD, Kentucky (WYMT) – A TikTok video is interviewed in eastern Kentucky when two men nail a person while a state trooper looks on.
Kentucky State Police Commander, Public Affairs, Sergeant Billy Gregory sent WYMT a statement in response to the viral video:
“On June 21, a KSP soldier responded to help with a situation in a parking lot in Hazard. The soldier spoke to the person’s caregivers and took appropriate action to de-escalate the situation using Crisis Intervention Training, a program developed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness that allowed caregivers to use their training to prevent that the person hurt himself or others. The ambulance responded to the scene and transported the person to the hospital, where they were treated and discharged. “
In the video, the poster “@the_savage_lokius” asks why a soldier was filmed when two white men pinned a black man whose age is unknown on the sidewalk of a parking lot.
“I’m going to show this video because we have no context of what is happening, but a cop is definitely standing there and doing nothing,” the poster said before the video of the incident was shown. The poster encouraged everyone in the danger zone to find out what happened.
Kentucky law states that the use of physical violence by a parent, guardian, or caregiver is “justified” when the defendant believes that violence is necessary to advance the “welfare” of a minor or mentally disabled person, and if the violence is not with the intention or danger of causing “death, grievous bodily harm, disfigurement, extreme pain or extreme emotional distress”.
