Instagram’s TikTok clone Reels is now out there within the Lite app in India
Instagram’s TikTok clone, Reels, officially launched last August, but has so far only been available on the main Instagram app. However, starting today, you can also find roles in Instagram Lite in India.
As with all of Facebook’s Lite apps, this one is less data intensive and uses fewer resources on your phone. So it’s perfect for users with lower-priced devices or small data plans, or both.
Reels is a feature that allows you to record and edit 15 second multi-clip video with audio, effects, and a variety of creative tools. If this sounds familiar to any TikTok user, it’s because it should be. Facebook and its various features have never been shy about mimicking successful features of other competing apps on a large scale. Snapchat in particular has been copied frequently, and due to the reach of Facebook’s apps, its copies may be more successful than the originals. It remains to be seen if that will be the case in the battle between Reels and TikTok, but Instagram seems to be taking Reels really seriously.
Instagram Lite does have the Reels function, but has neither IGTV nor a shop. And while you can see reels in Instagram Lite, you still can’t create them there – you’ll need the main app for that. But maybe the company is betting that more people would be willing to switch to it after seeing all of these roles, if that leads them to make their own.
The addition has apparently been sped up for India, as it’s where Reels’ traction can be seen and the early launch of the new Instagram Lite app, available since September.
