How Did The Berries And Cream TikTok Development Turn into A Factor?

If your TikTok “For You” pages look like mine, by now you’ve probably heard an audio clip that mentions a “little guy who loves berries and cream”. The sound itself is tied to an early 2000s treat that kids will totally remember, especially if they’re fans of starburst candy.

In 2007 Starburst published the first commercial with the “little boy” as an advertisement for berries and cream starburst flavors. The candies themselves had fruity flavors with a hint of cream to make them a little softer and luscious. Flavors include mixed berries, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, and you can still find boxes of varieties for purchase in some corners of the internet.

But it’s the catchy (and a bit off the rails) commercial that was perhaps more memorable than the candy itself. The first part shows actor Jack Ferver wearing contemporary clothes and interrupting two friends who are talking about the berry and cream starburst . Ferver then starts dancing and cheering, “Berries and cream, berries and cream, I’m a little boy who loves berries and cream.”

If this chant unlocked one of your long-forgotten core memories, you are not alone. The original commercial was so popular that Starburst eventually followed up with another ad in which Ferver gave a tutorial on “little lad dance”.

How and why is that niche commercial from 2007 now a trending TikTok sound? Podcaster Justin McElroy posted the first TikTok video that used the sound and encouraged people to use it, according to Know Your Meme. It took some time to catch on, but now the # BerriesAndCream tag has over 1.3 billion views, a number that doesn’t include the dozen of remixes that have “berries and cream” or “kiddies” in others Insert popular songs and TikTok sounds.

All in all, TikTok continues to be one of the most chaotic social media platforms in the world, which is why we love it so much. But do you know what we love more? Berries and cream. I guess!
