A woman on TikTok shared that she had a brief relationship with Matt James about a year before he took up his Bachelor role. She also shared that she was approached by ABC to be one of the contestants on the show.
The user, @ffion_ayre, wrote, “When you are almost a bachelor but instead meet the Loml.” The TikTok post then shows a long conversation with James on Instagram that apparently starts in July 2019 and lasts until at least September 2019. The video later shows an email from Sandy Mehlman, the Bachelor’s casting director, from August 2020.
“Hello Ffion, it was nice to meet you!” The email is partially. “If you are interested, please fill out the attached application and send it back to me with 10-15 current pictures and a short video from TUESDAY, August 25th. The sooner the better, since we’re running out of time. “
The TikTok ends with Ayre watching the season premiere of The Bachelor with her boyfriend.
There is nothing scandalous about the TikTok news
The conversation between James and Ayre is not racy. They discuss travel, concerts, soccer and try to coordinate opportunities to meet for a drink. It’s unclear how long the relationship lasted, but there’s not much reason to believe it ever was anything serious.
James was already on Bachelor Nation’s radar in the second half of 2019 after best friend Tyler Cameron starred on The Bachelorette that summer. James later took notice when he shadowed Hannah Brown during the season finale. He was eventually named one of the contestants on Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette, though that appearance never made it.
If there’s a revelation from the TikTok, it seems like ABC went out of their way to try to find a woman from James’ past to start the show.
In October, ABC released a list of 43 women who were potential candidates for The Bachelor’s upcoming season, including Madison Nelson, a woman who briefly dated James in 2019. Nelson was later dropped from the cast, according to Reality Steve. Obviously, she wasn’t the only woman from James’ past to be considered.
Not much is known about James’ dating history
James has kept his dating history extraordinarily private – which isn’t easy in today’s undergraduate franchise. Even his best friend doesn’t know much about James’s previous relationships. Cameron told US Weekly that he only saw James kiss a girl before his boyfriend went to film The Bachelor.
Perhaps that’s why Cameron roasted James quickly when viewers on the Internet called out his kissing technique with open eyes.
In January, James said his dating life had been particularly dry since moving to New York City.
“My dating story in New York [was] slim or not at all because I was broke. I didn’t have any money so I couldn’t take anyone out on a date, ”James said on Bachelor Happy Hour. “New York is expensive, so I didn’t expect a lot from each other by default.”
