The ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in California is inspired by Aerosmith. Park visitors ride through iconic Hollywood landmarks in a “limousine” while listening to the band’s music. It’s strange to see the roller coaster tracks in the footage lit up, especially from the front seat perspective.
One commentator summed up the sensation perfectly. “Disney rides with lights on, when the lights shouldn’t be on, scares me for some reason.”
The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is an example of a “dark ride” – an attraction that lets the riders immerse themselves in a “fantasy” through elements of the landscape. Storytelling is what sets a dark ride apart from the kind of traditional roller coaster you might see at a regional theme park or pier. This is why it feels so weird walking through a dark ride with the lights on – you’re essentially missing out on the main stimulus of the ride.
Plus, seeing the “tangled bundle of coasters” only in a warehouse is scary.
Commentators were amazed at how different the ride looked with the lights on.
“This video doesn’t work [it] Justice, ”said one person, referring to the speed of the journey.
“I never realized how close you are to porters and the like,” added another.
“I don’t like it,” someone wrote. “Turn the light off again.”
