Film TikTok Mocks Cliché Feminine Scientists (With Interstellar Music)

A TikTok user makes a hilarious video that mocks stereotypical female characters in science fiction films with Interstellar’s theme music.

A TikTok user made fun of clichéd female scientists in science fiction films with background music of Funny Interstellar. Science fiction has been a popular genre of film for decades, with filmmakers exploring ideas of advanced technology, alien life forms, and more through the medium. Science fiction classics like Alien and The Matrix combine elements of action, horror and drama and have not only stood the test of time, but have become some of the most influential films in history.

Thanks to improved special effects, modern science fiction films are immersed in a completely new way. Whether it’s a movie like Arrival, which explores humans’ first contact with aliens, or something like Ready Player One, which takes virtual reality to a terrifying new level, people love to watch films with a science-oriented theme . But while effects and action are top notch in many blockbuster science fiction films today, the characterization is sometimes put on hold.

When it comes to women specifically, there are usually a few basic tropes that many science fiction films follow that these characters box in. Popular TikTok user Caitlin Reilly recently did a hilarious parody to ridicule stereotypical women scientists in films. Reilly points out that science fiction films tend to focus on a character’s role as a woman or a scientist, but not both at the same time. It’s also interesting to see how she makes fun of the fact that female characters in science fiction films have poor communication styles as this comes up a lot. The use of interstellar music is particularly effective because it makes the connection clear.

It’s both funny and sad how accurate Reilly’s portrayal of leading female characters is in science fiction films. Characters like Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) in Gravity or Dr. Erin Mears (Kate Winslet) in Contagion immediately springs to mind. Filmmakers of other genres have made strides in expanding the characterization and identity of female characters, but science fiction still seems a bit behind. It’s as if the smoke and mirrors of special effects, action scenes, and futuristic shots somehow overlook the clichéd character traits. Thanks to this, however Interstellar-Inspired by TikTok, people like Reilly are showing that the time has come for female scientist characters to get the reach and storylines they deserve to really bring science fiction films into the present and future.
