Internet access is more important than ever, and the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for Internet inclusion. It gives us an important channel to connect with our friends and family, prepares us for tomorrow’s technology-intensive jobs, and enables us to participate in the wider economy. Internet access is increasingly seen as a cornerstone of sustainable development, according to the latest World Bank report on universal 4G / 5G broadband.

However, many people around the world still lack access to mobile connectivity, and technological innovations are required to fill this gap. In order to provide connectivity in rural areas, for example, we have to overcome many challenges, including a lack of infrastructure, high development costs and a lack of customized technical solutions. In urban areas, affordability is an ongoing challenge in many areas. In addition, a rapid increase in data traffic means that telecommunications networks are stressed and future Internet performance is at risk.

These complex challenges require innovative business and technology solutions. Our mission at Facebook Connectivity is to bring more people online to a faster internet. To ensure relevance and impact, we need input from thought leaders from industry and science to identify the most relevant challenges and the most promising solution elements. We must work together to ensure that our research and development efforts contribute to effective sets of solutions.

Over the past few years we have used expert research as a guide for our research activities, including the mmWave Channel Sounder V-band program and the off-line diffractive wireless backhaul project.

To continue our advances in rural connectivity, Facebook Connectivity invites some of our key partners to share their thoughts on our joint research activities. The workshop offers presentations from the following participants:

  • Alex Aimé, Network Investment Director, Facebook
  • Renan Ruiz, CTO, Internet for all of Peru
  • Omar Tupayachi Calderón, CEO of Mayu Telecomunicaciones
  • Roberto Nogueira, CEO, Brisanet
  • Grace Chen, Product Manager, Facebook
