This is certainly a popular trend with over 6.5 million TikTok views, with creatives around the world sharing their best hacks to turn store-bought cakes into Great British Bake Off-worthy showstoppers.

As with any good makeover, seeing the before and after is really fascinating. A simple supermarket cake with VIP treatment for a GBBO-worthy glow-up is not only addicting but also inspiring.

Here is Hannah’s pick list of TikTok’s best cake makeover tips that will inspire, impress, and take your baking game to the next level.

Toy Topper Hack is fun and easy

With this toy topper hack, a cake bought in the store becomes a playful show stopper in seconds. Browse the toy box for inspiration and see what you can use to create a fun, one-of-a-kind cake.

Whether your theme is dinosaurs, princesses, or even cars, toys can add an exciting and playful element to your cake. Splash on colored glaze and garnish the child’s favorite candy before adding the toy as a flashy topper.

If the toy isn’t new, wash it thoroughly with warm soap and water before adding it to the cake. Never use toys that are small enough to cause suffocation for children or adults.

Layered cakes are perfect for different palates

If you are throwing a party and have different flavors (lemon, chocolate, strawberry and many more) then this is the place for you. Why settle for one cake flavor when you can have many more?

All it takes is neat stacking and you are on your way to creating column cakes that wouldn’t look out of place in a posh bakery.

Get creative with flavor profiles by experimenting with layers, flavors, and glazes. It’s so easy, just stack store-bought cakes, cover with icing for a crumb coat, and then dip.

Imagine baking a wedding cake, but without pressure. Flavors include carrot cake, raspberry ripple cake, lemon and elderflower cake, coffee and walnut cake, and of course chocolate fudge cake.

Piñata cakes are a fabulous surprise

If the cake is meant for a surprise party, double the wow factor by making a piñata cake. This is when candy or candy is hidden in the middle of the cake. When cut open, the candies turn out to be a wonderful pile.

To get this surprise, take a small round jar and cut a hole in the center of all of the sponges except the top one. Fill the center hole with your favorite candy.

This can be Skittles, M & Ms, Maltese, or your favorite pick ‘n’ mix candy.

Place the top sponge cake, which has no hole, on top of the cake like a nice sponge cake cover, add ice cubes and serve.

Lift the cake up by channeling the botanical beauty

Flowers make your garden and cake more beautiful. This is a great hack if you don’t have a lot of decorations or want a simple finish on a cake. Just make sure you use flower tape to create a barrier between the flower stem and the sponge cake to keep guests safe while eating the cake.

Either bundle flowers and some green leaves together for a one-tier cake. Or, if you’re working with a two tier cake, create a floral trail by tying them up for a nice rustic look. For a more dramatic atmosphere, decorate your cake with individual petals using edible glue and edible flowers.

Round, square, choose any shape you want

Cakes can be any shape you want. Yes, round and square shapes are traditional, but if you want a cake that is a little different, go rogue, grab your knife and carve the cake into whatever shape you like. It’s easy to make a heart shape; Segment the cake and use buttercream to frost the new shape like this TikTok mummy did.

How about a cake for a princess? Not only does a castle cake look pretty, it also has a wow factor that makes your jaws drop in admiration. Grab some ice cream cones, chocolate rolls, fondant fantasy, and other smaller cakes to decorate the larger cake board.

Take a nostalgic trip with traditional British sweets

Cover your cake with classic treats for a traditional cake that will delight people of all ages. Use KitKats to create an edible wall around cakes that need extra structure, especially cheesecakes or mousses that need refrigeration.

Make an afternoon tea-inspired cake by covering the top of an ice-cold biscuit with jammy dodgers, bourbons, and custard creams.

How about a cake that defies gravity and is surprisingly easy to make? Grab two skewers, frosting, and your favorite candy and start creating your show stopper.

Do it with this simple numbers hack

Make your own edible number topper for a special birthday or anniversary. Melt the chocolate and squirt a number on baking paper while the chocolate is still hot.

Add a thin straw as a handle, cover with sprinkles, refrigerate for about 10 minutes and lay out on the cake. Make more “lollies” and refrigerate them where they’ll stay in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
