This time Athens has gone viral on social media, especially Instagram and TikTok, not because of its fight against COVID, nor because of its number of vaccinations, but because of its fantastic gourmet desserts that are unparalleled in taste and appearance.
Since the lockdown began, popular dessert and pastry shops in Athens have been offering delivery and collection, options that were quite unusual before the pandemic.
Dessert lovers who indulged in the creations of Greek pastry chefs shared photos of their desserts, starting a new trend that quickly went viral not only in Greece but also internationally.
“To say that Athens has a wide variety of desserts to choose from would be an understatement.
“The Greek capital is full of unique dessert cafes and patisseries that can satisfy your sweet tooth, be it traditional kataifi or gourmet cheesecake, while vegan options are also unlimited,” TripAdvisor stated in its recent blog post, highlighting the best excellent dessert places in Athens.

“I can’t believe these are real!” said another.
“I had this one today and I want more,” commented one user on Instagram.
Some of the Athens pastry shops also started sharing short videos with their pastry chefs to create their edible “works of art”. This sparked a trend among TikTok users who – some less successfully – started making desserts and creating fun videos with how-tos.
