Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on Facebook that the Polish government will do everything in its power to establish the framework for the operation of global social media, including the EU forum, to prevent them from undermining freedom of expression.
“The freedom that comes from the lack of regulation of the Internet has a number of positive effects. But there are also negatives: The Internet is gradually being dominated by large multinationals that are richer than many countries. These companies have started to grow Our internet activity is only a source of profit and a way to strengthen their global dominance. They hold on to the political correctness they deem appropriate. And they fight those who oppose them, “wrote the Prime Minister.
Morawiecki said the Internet has seen “censorship of freedom of expression” more and more recently.
“We don’t have to agree with what our opponents write, but we cannot forbid anyone to express their views if the law allows it,” said Morawiecki, adding that “neither algorithms nor the owners of corporate giants should decide what views are correct and which are not. “
“We will do everything we can to set the framework for the operation of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other similar platforms,” the Prime Minister vowed.
“In Poland we regulate this with relevant national laws. We will also propose introducing similar laws throughout the European Union,” wrote Morawiecki.
At the end of last year, the European Commission presented a draft regulation according to which US technology companies face heavy fines and the need to separate if they fail to comply with EU law.
The blocking of US President Donald Trump’s Twitter account has sparked a worldwide discussion about the possible regulation of large digital platforms. The Polish Minister of Justice, Zbigniew Ziobro, has promised to draw up such a regulation for domestic purposes.
