What They Are, Why They’re Helpful, & The way to Use Them

There’s no denying that I love Twitter.

And one of the things I like about the platform is the ability to create Twitter lists.

Unfortunately, this seems to be one of the underutilized features of Twitter as a lot of people forget everything or just don’t know how to use it. But the good news is that it ends today!

I have put together this ultimate guide to Twitter lists so you can learn what they are, why they are useful, and how to use them today!

What is a twitter list?

If you’re not familiar with Twitter lists, they’re essentially a curated group of Twitter accounts that you can save and keep track of. When accessing a list, you can only view Tweets from the accounts you added. It helps you avoid the noise of a busy timeline by only showing posts from a few selected accounts.

As shown above, when you create a new list, you will be asked to name your list, provide a description and set privacy. When creating lists, you can make them either public or private. A private list is for your eyes only. However, a public list can be viewed and followed by other Twitter users. You should keep this in mind when creating your lists as some are better than private!

Why Twitter Lists Are Awesome

Twitter lists are very useful when you follow a lot of people. With thousands and thousands of people on your “Follow” list, it’s impossible to keep up with everyone. And the updates from the people you really love will go invisible. This is why you want to create dedicated lists that you can use to stay up to date on your favorite accounts and topics. Instead of going through tons of tweets on your timeline, you can view this perfectly curated list.

In addition, Twitter lists are a great way to find out what’s going on in your industry. You can easily make lists of relevant topics you want to learn about or experts you want to learn from. Their lists are perfectly tailored to your needs, making Twitter a much easier platform to use and enjoy.

10 ways to use Twitter lists for your online presence

After you know all of the basics of using Twitter Lists, you may be wondering how to make them work for you. And as someone who has 89 (!) Twitter lists of their own, I know a thing or two about how to use them efficiently. Here are some ideas you can use:

1. Keep in touch with all of your best Twitter friends

Here’s the thing … Twitter is a busy place, especially if you follow a lot of people on the platform. Because of this, it can make you miss tweets from your favorite people as they are quickly buried in your timeline. Instead of having to visit their profiles one by one, you can use Twitter lists to stay up to date on what they’re sharing.

Gather all of your favorite Twitter friends in a list for easy access. This way you can avoid the noise and only see the posts that matter most to you. That way you will never miss anything, which is a huge plus! And it will be easier for you to continue to maintain relationships with these people.

2. Group team members to create a staff directory

Is there a company that you love and that you deal with often? You can easily keep up with the entire team by making a list of those who are active on Twitter. Today, many brands have their team present on Twitter and other social media platforms. All you have to do is find it! A quick search on Twitter can usually reveal other team members easily. That way, everyone is just a click away when you need to reach someone in the company.

On the other hand, if you have your own team, you can make a list that will house all of your employees. You can see all the latest updates at a glance so you can stay in touch. You can publish this list so that others can find your entire team, too. Think of it like a staff directory on Twitter! However, if your teammates are posting some questionable things, you might want to keep this list private!

3. Make a list of potential customers for future opportunities

When you run an online business, people need to come up to you and say they love what you do. If you find that people are frequently showing interest in your content or offers, consider saving them all to a prospect or customer list. That way, you can work on building a relationship with these people and over time, building the knowledge, like and trust factor.

Once these followers have established a real relationship with you, they are more inclined to make a purchase in the future. But if you are feeling brave and know that you have a product or service that a certain person would be interested in, then you can go to! This is a great way to use Twitter lists as they can increase sales when business is slow.

4. Save your most extraordinary customers in a list

Do you have great customers you’d like to keep up with? Maybe you have a virtual classroom with happy students? Either way, you can create a list of your current customers and customers. They will see what they post about, and maybe even new topics that you can help them with. Plus, you can take the time to reward your most valuable customers.

5. Stay up to date with your competitors

If you aren’t already up to date with what the competitors are doing in your field, you’re missing out! You can really learn a lot from what they are working on, what works well on their social media platforms, and what the audience has to say. The collection of this information is not such that you can copy it. That’s a no-no! However, it is useful for creating your own content and offers.

You can make a list of your Twitter accounts. You can see their posts to find out what they’re talking about, how they interact with followers. You want to see what others are saying about your competitors because you can address their problems and concerns through your own business. You never know when you might get someone on your side!

6. Save accounts for your favorite topics

We all have favorite topics that we’d love to learn more about, whether they’re business related or not. Take a moment to think about what you love about Google. Maybe you want to learn more about social media and are you always on the lookout for the latest news? You could make a list of some of the best social media experts out there. With just a few clicks, you’ll always have the latest social media tricks at hand.

You can do the same no matter what your interests are! Whether it’s social media, knitting or your favorite actress … a Twitter list will keep you up to date with the latest tweets on the subject.

7. Follow local businesses for updates, events, and more

If there are local businesses in your area that you want to keep up with, Twitter Lists can help. Find their accounts and add them to a list where you can see their updates, upcoming events, etc. This way you will never miss out on important details! It’s perfect if you enjoy networking in person and want to make sure you know about the latest happenings.

8. Add conference or meet-up attendees (and presenters) to keep in touch

Then, building on that last tip, you can add everyone you meet at these events to a list. Then you can use this Twitter list to keep in touch long after the event ends. After all, this is crucial if you want to work on cultivating relationships with new people.

I’m also a big fan of making a list of speakers at a conference. This will serve two purposes. 1) You did the heavy lifting for other participants. You can view and subscribe to your list. You saved them time! It’s an easy way to get known at the conference. As an added bonus, speakers will receive a notification that you’ve added them to your list. It’s a great way to get on your radar ahead of the conference. 2) Easily search for twitter handles for speakers to tag when you tweet them.

I share more tips like these in my article “How to tweet your way through a conference”.

9. Make a list for your Twitter chat participants (and guests too!).

If you’re managing a Twitter chat, it makes sense to add participants to a list. That way, you can stay in the know and be informed of what your community is talking about. Pay attention to the tweets they post, the questions they ask, etc. What is their interest? This can be a great resource for future Twitter chat topics, but it’s also a fantastic way to continue building relationships after the chat is over.

I have a list for #TwitterSmarter participants as well as for guests who have been in the chat. It currently has 126 members and there are 54 people who follow this list as it is public.

10. Increase your Twitter visibility with optimization lists

Did you know that Twitter public lists appear in search results? You can take advantage of this by creating public lists that appeal to your target audience. For example, let’s say you offer SEO services. You can make a list of other SEO resources and experts as your target audience would likely be interested in reviewing these accounts too.

The key here is to make sure that your list is adding value to your target audience’s life. They want something they’ll be interested in or they won’t find it while searching, they won’t follow your list, and they won’t even bother to follow you. Use searchable keywords in the title and description of your list for the best results.

Call to Action:

  • Go to your Twitter account and see if any lists have already been created. If you do, clean up these lists or delete them so you can start over.
  • Next, think about what you want to use Twitter lists for. From there, you can create lists that suit your needs.
  • Make it a priority to check your lists regularly so that you are always up to date with what others are sharing on Twitter.
