Facebook can sue Apple over antitrust law

Facebook is considering filing an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, said two people familiar with the considerations. This could heighten tensions between two of the most powerful tech companies in the world.

Facebook executives discussed accusing Apple of anti-competitive measures in the App Store, said people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t allowed to speak publicly. The social network wanted to say in a lawsuit that Apple treats its own apps preferentially while imposing restrictive rules on third-party developers like itself.

Facebook didn’t discuss filing the lawsuit until December, people said. It is unclear whether the company will take legal action.

The social network declined to comment on a possible lawsuit. “We believe that Apple is anticompetitive by using control of the App Store to improve the bottom line at the expense of app developers and small businesses,” said a spokesman.
