KATHMANDU: A video clip from a speech by Maoist politician and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) on March 12, has seen widespread coverage on social media in recent days.

At the bottom right of the clip you can see a TikTok logo and username @paudelaryan, the clip creator, while some social media users made the TikTok logo and clip creator name invisible and shared on multiple social media platforms to have.

TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short videos. TikTok allows users to create videos by singing, trading or lip syncing with background tracks, or even compiling videos from existing photos and clips. TikTok videos can be shared on other social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter.

The 21-second clip has the following heading: “Look how shameless it is! Ultimately, he calls the common people bad, and those are Prachanda’s words. He accuses the citizens of being lazy, greedy and sinful. “

In the video clip, Prachanda is heard saying, “The leaders are bad because the people are bad. If you all get good, the leaders have no choice but to be good. They are lazy, inactive, somewhat greedy, and more sinful. And your leaders became like you. “

The 21-second video clip uploaded by TikTok user Paudel Aryan (@paudelaryan) has already been shared 2,130 times and viewed more than 341,000 times. The video clip received 17,300 “love reactions” and more than 1,800 comments. The same video clip was also shared by many people on Facebook. A March 16 Facebook post with the video posted by Bhanu Cpn was shared 3,700 times and viewed more than 128,000 times. The clip shared by Facebook user Rudra Thapa Saru on the Facebook group “Sasto Ghar Jagga Nepal Kathmandu” was shared 98 times. The ‘Nepali man Nepali pan’ Facebook page shared the same clip, which was re-shared 26 times.

The same TikTok clip that user @ kiranjoshi235 shared on Twitter, which slightly changed the caption and removed Paudel Aryan (@paudelaryan’s TikTok logo), was retweeted 17 times.

Fact check:

Since the clip also has a Sutra TV logo, a search on Sutra TV’s YouTube channel (SUTRA TV HD) found a full-length video of the speech of 26 minutes and 32 seconds from which the clip was extracted. We found out that Prachanda had given the speech on March 12th at a book launch in Kathmandu. He had published a book called “Sambriddhi Ko Roadmap” (A Roadmap to Prosperity) by Prakash Bikalpa.

As claimed in the viral video clip, Prachanda made the following statement: “The leaders are bad because the people are bad …” But according to Dahal, this was not his own statement and he simply quoted the famous Chinese writer. Essayist and poet Lu Xun. We couldn’t verify that these were actually Lu Xun’s words.

Prachanda made the following statement at the event: “You have all heard of Lu Xun, the great poet. By that time, some people had developed a habit of constantly criticizing politicians. After hearing the criticism, Lu Xun said, “The leaders are bad because the people are bad. If you all get good, the leaders have no choice but to be good. They are lazy, inactive, somewhat greedy, and more sinful. And your leaders became like you. ‘”So this shows that Dahal’s statement has been carefully truncated to show him in a bad light.
