This TikTok hand sign might save your life. This is what you should know.

“Now that I know there is a sign, it makes life easier,” said one San Antonio student.

SAN ANTONIO – An emergency hand signal started as a TikTok trend and later saved a life.

The distress signal came in handy when a teenager kidnapped in Kentucky needed immediate help.

“It’s nice, it’s helpful. It makes you feel much safer, ”said UTSA student Indali Soberanis.

KENS 5 spoke to some UTSA students who say it was a resource they didn’t even know was available.

“It’s kind of scary and all you can do is pick up your phone or throw a look at someone, you can help me. Now that I know there is a sign, it makes life easier, ”said Alyssa Garcia, a UTSA student.

Angelica Cervantes works closely with victims of sex trafficking and domestic violence.

“It helps remove stigma from asking for help,” said Angelica Cervantes, chief programs director at Providence Place.

“So many of our survivors have described situations when they were in it that they felt they couldn’t ask for help,” said Cervantes. “That helps them to be seen.”

Cervantes says with positive trends like this spreading fast on social media, the community now has an important role to play in identifying someone in need and giving them the help they need.

“I hope that people around me will be more vigilant so I don’t have to look at them and make them seem like I’m not making this sign for free,” said Garcia.

“I feel better when I know that you can get out of a situation with your own help,” said Villarreal.
