The Reality About TikTok’s Grilled Sunflower Development

Shoots aside, the TikTok trend of eating flowers whole didn’t develop in a vacuum. In 2018, TV chef Andrew Zimmer gave Pennsylvania-based chef Tomasz Skowronski a greeting on Instagram in a post describing the perfect sunflower to eat. “The key to the @aptekapgh sunflower dish is to find a sunflower that has bloomed, but the seeds are still elongated and immature, soft with no peel left,” Zimmer said of choosing the right sunflower for your next party.

Delish spoke to Chef Tomasz Skowronski, who confirmed that sunflower consumption is definitely a thing in parts of the world, especially in Poland, where he grew up. “It’s really common in the country for people to eat whole sunflower heads that are fully ripe. Children sit on a fence and pick and eat them, or there are boys who drink a beer and eat it.”

And while the sunflower is edible from tip to root, Skowronski says he has his Druthers on when the flowers are to be harvested, if they are not to be enjoyed just for their looks. “We figured out a period that [lent sunflowers] Easier to be eaten, “said the cook. That meant harvesting sunflowers earlier so that the seeds don’t become so tough.
