Telegram dethrones TikTok to develop into most downloaded non-gaming app in January: Sensor Tower

According to the Sensor Tower report, Telegram has overtaken TikTok and is the most downloaded non-gaming app overall as of January 202. The messaging platform had more than 63 million installs, which is 3.8 times the download compared to January 2020. The app clearly benefited from WhatsApp’s new privacy policy, which caused quite a stir and resulted in users looking for alternatives instead of accepting the terms of use.

While Telegram was the most downloaded non-gaming app on the Play Store, it ranked fourth on Apple’s App Store. On iOS devices, TikTok is still the most downloaded app in January 2021, followed by the YouTube and video conferencing app Zoom. Overall, TikTok’s downloads were exceeded by a million in the previous month.

The Telegram rose from number 9 in December 2020 to number 1 in January 2021. Of 63 million downloads, 24 percent came from India, followed by 10 percent in Indonesia.

Telegram wasn’t the only messaging app that caught on, however. Signal’s downloads also skyrocketed as it was the second most downloaded app on the Google Play Store and the third largest overall. In the Apple App Store, Signal managed to get into the top 10 as it was number 10 on the list.

Signal saw a massive spike in its downloads soon after the new privacy policy on Facebook’s own messaging platform was introduced. The tweet from SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk helped the app grow in popularity many times over as WhatsApp drew flak around the world.

In the absence of the short-form video sharing app TikTok, the ‘Made in India’ app Moj managed to reach eighth place in the Play Store’s top 10 list. It has over 100 million downloads on the platform. Despite all the controversy, WhatsApp was on the list and took fifth place overall.
