PCI has proposed structure of Media Council for all platforms: Anurag Thakur

The Press Council of India (PCI) has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to set up a media council that includes all media platforms such as TV, print and digital.

“The Ministry had previously received a proposal from the Indian Press Council to set up a media council that would include various media platforms,” said Minister of Information & Broadcasting (I&B), Anurag Thakur, when responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

Thakur also said the three media have different regulatory mechanisms. “There are currently separate regulatory mechanisms for various media platforms – Press Council of India under the Press Council Act, 1978 for print media, Cable TV Network (Regulation) Act, 1995 for television and information technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics)” Code) Rules, 2021 under the Information Technology Act, 2000 for digital news publishers and OTT platforms, “he noted.

Last year the PCI had informed its members of its determination to recommend that the Center make appropriate changes to the existing Press Council Act of 1978 to include electronic media, news channels, e-papers, social media, etc. into one law.

In a letter dated September 29, 2020, the PCI had informed its members that the decision to recommend a media council continues the council’s conviction that “if the print media, in the opinion of the council, is clear, something parallel is true for the media as a whole advisable.”

This includes newspapers and magazines in printed or other form, e-newspapers, news portals, social media and all other platforms for news distribution in addition to electronic media (TV channels as well as radio).
