On-line security commissioner to get authorized clout | Eire
An online safety commissioner is set to be put on a formal legislative footing, the media minister has confirmed.
The Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill was published last January but there was no explicit provision for an online safety commissioner within the legislation.
The government said at the time that a commissioner would be appointed as part of a six-person media commission. However this did not allay the concerns of a number of senators who called for there to be a specific legislative underpinning for the role. An Oireachtas committee had also called for the position to be “explicitly included” in the legislation.
Speaking in the Seanad this week, Catherine Martin said the government would move to give the role of a specific legislative underpinning.
