Many TikTokers like Alexa Johnson carried this hack into the air and swear by this method to fight pimples and moisturize the skin at the same time. But does it really work? We worked with the New York-based state-approved dermatologist Dr. Kavita Mariwalla spoke to confirm the effectiveness of this sheet mask trend.
“Depending on what material the mask is made of, it can soothe the skin or help transport ingredients into the skin,” explains Mariwalla. “Moisture and occlusion always help the ingredients get better absorbed by the skin, and that’s essentially what all sheet masks do.”
In their viral TikTok, Johnson used the Shield & Soothe PPE Facial Hydrogel Mask from Masque Bar, which is specially designed to be worn under medical masks. It contains hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and calendula to deeply moisturize and soothe the skin. She said she wore it for about 45 minutes and it helped rehydrate her skin. Ultimately, Johnson loved that it didn’t make her facial skin feel dry and cracked the way it normally would when wearing a mask without a sheet mask underneath. (Pro tip: apply a moisturizing lip balm like she did when applying the sheet mask for a true self-care moment in the sky.)
