Hodan Yousuf’s Stellar Wardrobe Fuses Modest Fashion, ’80s Silhouettes, and Thrifting

My faith is an important part of my wardrobe and my image. Some might say that I have restrictions on what I can wear, but I don’t see it that way. Modesty shouldn’t be an obstacle when it comes to fashion or the industry. With a little patience, self-confidence and a willingness to experiment, you can build an individual style that suits you and represents it holistically. No adjusting or trying to fit in a box. Fashion is all about expression and storytelling. It is up to you whether or not you impose these restrictions. My belief is part of my identity and not separate from my creative process and style. It adds to my individuality and how I choose to represent myself.

You seem really good at layering too! What’s your tip for this fall?

Invest in good outerwear coats, vintage silk buttons, blazers, and some two-piece suits. You can just bypass these parts and add various accessories. Don’t be afraid of accessories. Ties will become a hot accessory this fall-winter. It enhances any look ten times. And in the end, trust your judgment and don’t be afraid to experiment. Try different styles until you find the one that works for you. Everyone has their preferences. Try to understand that personal style is just that; it is personal to you. Some things that work for me may not be appealing to the next person.

What are you currently looking to buy next?

I’ve never wished for a pair of shoes more than these platform Balenciaga Crocs.

What’s your favorite TikTok you’ve ever made? What took the longest?

My newest outfit of the week video. It perfectly captures what I would normally wear for a normal week. For everyday looks, I tend to go for black and white as the color scheme as my other looks are usually more for everyday use. These other “out-there” outfits are kept for evenings or special events. Most of the videos I shoot are time consuming because I show more outfit variations with each video. This includes planning, filming, editing and subsequent cleaning. So we expect at least 2.5 hours for each TikTok.

What’s the next big idea you want to tackle on TikTok?

To be more consistent, have fun, and explore more ways to make used items look luxurious!
